FOP endorses Kilgore

Stick a fork in Tim Kaine. The Fraternal Order of Police endorsed Jerry Kilgore for Governor. In 2001, they did not endorse either candidate. In 1997, they endorsed Don Beyer. This is their first endorsement of a Republican gubernatorial candidate since George Allen in 1993. Word is, Kaine was putting on a full-court press to get the FOP endorsement. This is a major blow to his campaign.

Shrug. Kaine already got VCOPS, which pretty effectively nips the Death Penalty issue in the bud since they never would have endorsed him if they had any fear that the DP was under threat. FOP has become more and more politically conservative, so this is no real surprise.

VCOPS is a union. No big deal there. A Dem getting a union endorsement isn't news. FOP making one is.

And the last time the FOP endorsed a Democratic Governor candidate was....

They are pretty amusing: they spend their time lambasting Republican delegates for voting time and time again against their legislative agenda, and then go on to endorse most of them anyway. Call it a union, call it a PAC, but... least effective lobbying... ever.

VCOPS, however, is very very pro Death Penalty. Their unwavering support of Kaine is a big vote of confidence in his favor on that issue.
