Stick a fork in Barg, she's done.....

Frederick is up by 300 votes now that Washington-Reid came in. There's only absentees left to count and it won't make a difference. Final tally 51-49.

Well, I hate to jinx him, but given her connections to the Dem machine in eastern PWC, you'd have to say this is a pretty significant win for Jeff, no? If he can fend off a challenge from a very well known Dem challenger, you'd have to think he can beat just about anyone.

Barg was just a horrendous candidate and she deserved to lose. She was counting on her name ID and didn't think that she had to work for it.

As far as the Dem machine in eastern PWC, it has broken down and rusted on the side of the road.

I think it broke down because Jeff Frederick ran it over with a steam roller.

Jeff's victory is significant, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is his opposition to Warner's tax and spending increases last year.

He was Warner's No. 1 target. His district is pretty poorly drawn for a Republican. He drew, as opposition, the only Dem of significance in his district.

I don't know if a Republican in that district can ever draw more than 60%. And while Hilda ran a lousy campaign, she spent a lot of money. I remember fondly those days of receiving two or more mailers just from her (who drew up their mailing list?!?!).

A Republican will always have a fight in that district. Jeff and Amy are up to the challenge, but it could be lost if a credible candidate runs a good campaign against him. Who that candidate is remains a mystery, since Hilda was about all they had there.

The Dems are running out of ammo in PWC. They've only got Barg, Jenkins and Ebert left as elected officials (and now Barg's got a stinging defeat to her credit, too.) Their great new hope that they ran against Maureen Caddigan for Dumfries Supervisor in '03 got crushed 3-1. That's not to say we can run any old candidate and win. If we're not careful, they might get lucky here or there. But overall, their quality and quantity of candidates is at a great disadvantage when compared to our party's here in PWC.
