The West Wing Debate....

This break in real politics is brought to you by the TC-Blog. Last night was the much anticipated West Wing live debate. I must say the concept seemed tough to pull off, but both Alda and Smits did an excellent job. Forrest Sawyer of course did well. The general direction the debate went seemed ideal, but very unlikely. Both candidates opted to throw out the rules and allow for a real dialogue back and forth between one another. This set up an excellent discussion for both candidates to truly say how they felt and react to one another, as opposed to the 60 or 30 second sound bites from the stump speech like we get in real life. I highly doubt most politicians could pull off such a debate. If they could though it would be an excellent site to see. On the argument side it was clear Santos(Smits) was a little to liberal for most people in America, though I could understand where he was coming from and respect the thought process(I can say that for very few liberals). Vinick(Alda) seemed to make the best argument I have heard in years of why one should be a Republican. He spoke about true conservatism that focuses on a smaller more efficient government and laws that do not infringe on ones ability to live life. The American spirit for freedom and the free-market economy were the principles that Vinick espoused too, ideals we once held in the GOP. In the end this was an idealist way of looking at a Presidential contest. I doubt we will ever see two candidates like this that all Americans, regardless of ideology, would be proud to follow. Today's negative atmosphere and need for both sides to appeal to the extremes of their ideology have killed such a proposition. Oh well-- at least we have Hollywood to make things seem cool!

Agreed. This was very well done and Alda espoused Republican / conservative principles better than any GOP presidential candidate since Steve Forbes in 1996. Actually, there is a reason for that.....

Much of Alda's answers on economics, especially the part about African debt relief and how tax cuts in those countries are really the answer, came from an economic consulting firm called Polyconomics founded by the late Jude Wanniski (who "The West Wing" was dedicated to last night.) Wanniski was also a Forbes adviser in 1996.

And in a surprising turn of events for NBC, Alda/Vinick wins the debate among young folks...

The columnist claims that NBC was going to bring back Smits as the election winner, but now this causes a second thought.

Of course, those of us who saw the segment at Bartlett's Presidential library know that what will really happen... ;-)
