"I Regret My Abortion"

Maybe it's just the type of person I am, but for me to believe something I need to experience it in person. I am pro-life, but all of the anti-abortion rhetoric fire and brimstone does nothing to solidify my position. After tonight though I will never have a second thought again. While walking from work to the metro I stopped off infront of the Supreme Court to hear a group of women speak. The women all held signs stating "I regret my abortion" and one by one they got up to a podium and spent about 10 minutes telling their stories. Many broke out in tears as they told heart-wrenching stories of their youthful mistakes. To see first hand people who actually had experienced such a life changing event was amazing. It did something to me no statistic or article could ever do.

So if I were to round up a bunch of women who gave heartfelt speeches saying "I'm glad I had an abortion", then that would change your mind??

Rent DIRTY DANCING and watch it a woman getting what amounts ultimately to a back-ally coat hanger-style abortion.

As awful and potentially regretable an experience abortion is, you may have second thoughts on whether it should be illegal.

People make bad choices all the time. I would expect that many women who get abortions would later regret them, just like many women who get married later regret it, or people who get plastic surgery sometimes regret it.

Doesn't mean we should outlaw those choices, though.

and i have never seen dirty dancing.

but i saw the women tonight.

There are emotional people on both sides. It's just, you heard what you want to hear. I doubt an emotional speech in support of abortion would have the same effect on you.

Your indoctrination has dictated what viewpoint you appreciate.

Watchutalkin'bout Willis?

What kind of logic says it's better to allow millions to be killed so that a few won't have to choose to get a back-alley abortion. That is completely screwy and lacks any compassion.

Nothing screwy about it, rtwng.

By outlawing abortion, you are saying a woman cannot do as she wishes with her own body. Even if you think abortions are stupid and wrong, well, that only puts them in the same category as facial tatoos, noserings, and vinegar enemas.

Oh my goodness! Anon 902 is RIGHT! I love the movie Dirty Dancing: that Patrick Swayze is a hunk. It's horrible what Penny had to go through with her back alley abortion, and Lenny Briscoe from Law and Order was SO MEAN to her!

You've competely changed my mind about abortion!

But wait a minute. On Sex and the City, Miranda (the one who looks like Dave Foley) decided not to go through with her abortion and ultimately, she and Steve got married.

Maybe Miranda was right and Penny from Dirty Dancing was wrong.

I'm back to being pro-life again. It's a good thing that we have pop culture to help us make these decisions. THANKS ANON 902!!

TC, as moving as those women may have been to you (and Lord, that's a serious decision to regret), there are probably just as many who will speak to why they don't regret having an abortion.

and i gotta play devil's advocate. you're openly pro-life, but you say "I never said it should be illegal." what's your solution/idea on the issue without making abortion illegal?

At 1/24/2006 12:36:00 AM, Blogger Elle said...

nevermind, TC, I'm sorry. i just fell into one of those dangerous polarizations surrounding the issue. just because you're pro-life doesn't mean you're against women ultimately making decisions for themselves.

General warrants, whereby an officer or messenger may be commanded to search suspected places without evidence of a fact committed, or to seize any person or persons not named, or whose offence is not particularly described and supported by evidence, are grievous and oppressive, and ought not to be granted.

Even in the womb. Even if someone might regret it later.

elle, the thing is, these rallies support illegalizing abortion, and he attended these rallies.

Clearly, he favors illegalizing abortion. I get the feeling he is just covering his ass by being non-comittal.

willis: the right of a person to live supercedes every other right.

also, if you know anything about abortion procedures, you know that today abortions are still done with metal rods. they still cause pain and lasting damage to a woman's body that in many cases has prevented women from ever being able to have children again

i also heard bobby schindler was there, thanking the pro-lifer supporters for standing by his family when they were fighting not to have his sister starved to death by our government.

Actually, what I would like to see is a pro-choice person get up and say "I regret not having had an abortion when I was pregnant with [fill-in-the-blank]". That would be the equivalent to those on the pro-life side saying they regret having theirs.

The right to life supercedes a woman's liberty with her own body??

Nobody sent me that memo.

Forcing a woman to carry a baby is medieval.

Keep in mind everyone that the cornerstone of the Democrat Party is the right for women to have unprotected sex with men who they don't want to have children with.

This is a "right" in their eyes, and the lives (and rights) of children are therefore meaningless.

This is also a reflection of how the Democrat Party has become the party of death.

When someone worships the beauty and convenience of death, any arguments about life, civility, or love for the unborn fall upon deaf ears.

And the Republican party is the anti-liberty party.

Willis - not to argue technicalities, but in order to make choices you have to be given the opportunity to live first. Therefore, the right to life supercedes all other rights granted to us. So if you want to talk about liberties - why don't we address the liberties that are taken away from innocent babies who can't speak up for themselves. I am sure if they could, that they would choose life over being brutally murdered at the hands of a malicious doctor and a selfish mother.

Willis,

Case and point!

Again, legislating that women must carry babies to term is medieval. It is telling the woman what she can and cannot do with her own body. And then, you have to deal with the problem of thousands of women having children that they don't want to have.

The baby is a foreign object inside of the woman, and the government would be telling her that she cannot remove it. That is sick.

Oh, and I'm rubber, you're glue...

willis: the label which you and the rest of the anti-liberty left choose for pro-abortion, "pro-choice", is a hypocrisy in itself. you want to take away every right that child will never make.

we're anti-liberty???

That's your stance!!!

I'm pro-liberty.
